Turkmenistan symbol of personality cult torn down
President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has started to dismantle his predecessor’s legacy and promised reforms since coming to power in 2007. Niyazov, who renamed himself the Great Turkmenbashi, the “Father of All Turkmen”, died unexpectedly in 2006 after two decades of iron-fisted rule.

A prominent golden statue of Turkmenistan’s former dictator has been taken down in a move further eroding the personality cult around the late Central Asian leader.

There was a gilded statue of Turkmenistan's former dictator Saparmurat Niyazov that rotated to face the sun. The Arch of Neutrality was a centrepiece of the capital, Ashgabat, and the most distinctive monument built in honour of eccentric leader Saparmurat Niyazov.

The statue stood on a 230-foot white tile-clad tripod in rotating to face the sun.
