PUBLISHERS OVERVIEW January '04

Is the World A Safer Place As '04 Dawns?'

We offer our free reviews of 37 nations, many of which are key players in the answer to that question.

IRAQ, now the hot destination for suicidal Islamic jihadists, is hardly proceeding according to the pre-war, neo-con agenda. AFGHANISTAN is mired in deep trouble with the going getting distinctly tougher. Possible big problems for Europe as SERBIA shows signs of a resurgence of the powers of darkness. Things are certainly looking up for the government of LIBYA, but are not looking good for SYRIA. As always, enigmatic, nuclear-armed, militaristic NORTH KOREA, manages both to survive and to remain a mystery- which, as ever, we seek to illuminate.

IRAN is on the cusp: elections in February will determine if is to go forward or backward - of vital importance to IRAQ and to the region's medium term stability.
TURKEY, a pivotal geopolitical player is distinctly unhappy, being pulled and tugged by insistent countervailing forces and events, only the latest of which was Islamic terrorism in Istanbul.
In RUSSIA a triumphant Putin consolidates, with things very much going his way.
GEORGIA, now a oil-transit pawn in the new 'Great Game' between Moscow and Washington, is about to have new elections to replace those of last November which provoked its velvet revolution. Former communists, KAZAKSTAN and SLOVENIA, both say farewell to the IMF…now no longer needed!

ALL OF THIS, PLUS REVIEWS OF A FURTHER TWENTY FIVE NATIONS.

...…and a HAPPY NEW YEAR from newnations and
